Saturday April 17th

During this workshop, students enjoy learning how to create beautiful cloud paintings and take home at least one or two (possibly more) large finished pieces of artwork in a day. Understand how light differs within clouds and how to make decisions about color intensity, structure and light to create different moods. The workshop focuses on cumulus and cirrus clouds for first time students while repeat attendees may have the time to work on stratus, sunsets, fog and other light effects in the sky.

Here's a new take on the gravel road painting. On this one, I'm changing the title to "Little Adventure at Daybreak" to reflect my feelings about the drives Walter and I take to explore the country. When we see a country road like this leading somewhere beautiful, we just get on it with the goal of getting lost and finding ourselves somewhere new.

I've been enjoying painting a lot of sky and landscape paintings for an upcoming solo exhibit at Peninsula gallery in Lewes DE, a lovely historic, shoreside town next to to Rehoboth. Here are some of the paintings - coming up over the next few posts. Enjoy!

Speaking of Skyscapes:
Some of my students were inspired by all of the cloud paintings in the studio and have asked for a short course. So, I'll be teaching a fun, 1 day mini-workshop on cloudscape painting ($85-100/person depending on how many attend) to a group of my students in early spring 2010. If you're interested in participating, drop me a line. It will likely be a Saturday or Sunday this spring. Everyone will go home with at least one or two cloud paintings. It's great fun once you know the right tools and techniques. If you've ever thought of painting clouds on a mural in your home, this is a great way to learn.

Fresh Gravel Road on a Crisp Sunny Morning

This little charming scene with it's warmer sky and cool shadows was part of that amazing painting week Peggy gave me in the mountains. I'm still thankful to Peggy for that wonderful opportunity and find myself filled with inspiration months later. When I saw this gently curving little gravel road turning off into the mountains, I pulled over to make a quick compositional sketch and make color notes. The light was so crisp and colorful that morning, I had to move on to fill my head with "first impressions" of many scenes and paint them later.

Dash of Clouds

This cute little painting was something I dashed out in a moment of inspiration while working on the larger skyscapes. I imagine this might rest above my son's bed or near his airplane lamp. I might even pair it later with a landscape in the same format so they can hang one above the other. When I'm working on a large series for a show ... I often need to take a break and just have a little childlike fun. My most spontaneous paintings come out of moments like this.

Clouds Reflecting in a Coastal Lake

I remember this moment so clearly. Dad was still with us. This was the day he gave me that feather that figured prominently in my still life paintings 3 years ago. Our family was out canoeing on this coastal lake with big beautiful clouds both above and below us. I was happy and roundly pregnant sitting in the center of the canoe while Walter and Kit chatted. Feeling charmed, I promised myself I'd paint this moment eventually. Today seemed like the perfect opportunity to paint and include it in this series of light hearted paintings.

Passionate Sky - My New Cloud and Skyscape series

This large painting ( 36 x 52 ) was finished this week. I've enjoyed painting this skyscape series and am ready for more painting today.

A group of students saw this series underway and has asked me to teach a short course in sky painting. Why not? It will be fun. We'll get together on a Saturday morning. Stay tuned for more details and e-mail me if you're interested. This won't be formally advertised. I'm just mentioning it to see if one or maybe two people would like to join the group for fun.

While painting this, I was thinking of my husband's documentary and the Mennonite Elder's great trek across central Asia during the 19th century. When I saw the model (John Irvine) on this day, he reminded me of the elders and I saw the opportunity to capture this sense of lighthearted wisdom, age and experience. It is painted in the layered style used by the old masters.

The painting has a story. The setup reminds me of summer days when my grandmother and I would go raspberry picking. We would walk through her garden toward the woods and emerge in a field of wildflowers on the other side. On our way to the raspberries, she stopped by the wildflowers and used her hand to lean a flower of queen anne's lace down where I could see it and explained to me in a poem that Queen Anne was an expert lace maker. She had carefully sewn this lace sitting with the ladies of the court. Just as it was done, the queen pricked her finger and a drop of blood fell in the center of the flower which still rests there today to remind us of the beauty of imperfection.

Because Queen Anne's Lace blooms when the berries are ripe in the summer, seeing this wildflower always reminds me of my grandmother and our walks past the garden and to the edge of the woods on host summer days which concluded with sugared berries over homemade vanilla ice cream.

I love the way garden roses take on a little gesture like this. It's sort of dipping over as if to gaze at a pool of water or other scenery on the ground below. This painting is a bamboo style darkwood frame to match the red rose frame. The two paintings look very pretty side by side or one on top of the other. Put the red rose below the white rose and you'll have a sort of rose version of the "brady bunch" opening credits. (laughter)

This is the story of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Scissors was constantly mouthing off, spewing propaganda, cutting on everything and everyone. One day, rock realized that he could probably take scissors in a fight. On a whim, he got paper to ambush scissors and shut him up "once and for all" with the help of cloth who was paper's best friend. Just then, as paper and scissors contemplated their victory, rock realized the balance of power had shifted and wondered how long it would take paper to catch on that she was at a serious advantage.

Finally! It took 5 weeks but I've finally finished this painting for the May Exhibit

I loved working on the silk, the detailed embroidery and even taking a break to paint the oranges and the rope holding the stretcher bar on which the garment hangs. But, I'm excited about the next project so it's nice to be finished. I'm starting two new ones today. Here's that lady again. This time, she's in her cotton underwear in a dressing room with silk curtains (that's a peak at the sleeve of a Kimono to appear in the next painting) waiting for help getting dressed into elaborate wedding attire. These paintings have helped me explore how much just posing or dressing a still life item can give it a whole life of meaning.

Having a child naturally makes a person reflect on their own life, the cycle of life and the way a child grows up in a "new but old" world. My husband's leather baby shoes (our son wears sneakers with LED lights on them) with these blocks were painted as he put the baby to bed last night ... so it has a special little meaning.

This is a painting in process for the April solo exhibit at Applegate gallery in Virginia. Unfortunately, I still haven't figured out how to take photos with accurate color. If it's possible to accidentally create a setting on the camera that is stuck on "Overexpose everything with too much red and hide all of the cool tones", then I have done exactly that.
